Inside: A real review of a family visit to the Mariners’ Museum and Park in Newport News, VA. We visited to see the USS Monitor Center, but there is so much more to see.
Looking for a museum that will totally wow your kids (and you, too)? The Mariners’ Museum and Park in Newport News, VA is packed with real-life ship parts, fascinating maritime stories, and interactive exhibits that make learning feel like play. Best of all? Admission is just $1 — seriously!
We’re going to sail through the highlights and our favorite exhibits, especially the incredible USS Monitor Center — it’s one of those places your family will talk about for years to come. Then we’ll give you all the details you need to know for your visit.
The USS Monitor Center: Ironclad Adventures Await
This is the star of the show — and for good reason. The USS Monitor Center, inside the Mariners’ Museum, brings one of the most dramatic naval stories in American history to life in a way that’s totally hands-on and kid-approved.
One of my kids is super into Civil War history, especially the ironclads, so he was thrilled the whole time, of course. But really, all the kids we brought on our visit enjoyed checking out these exhibits. There’s lots of space to let kids explore the exhibits at their own pace, with video and audio help to keep them engaged.

This center is air-conditioned and stroller-friendly (no AC on the outdoor model, of course).
What You’ll See and Do at the USS Monitor Center
Discover the battle of Hampton Roads, where the Monitor faced off with the CSS Virginia (aka the Merrimack) in the first ironclad battle in history

See real parts of the Monitor — like its turret, engine, and a cannon, all resting in chemical baths designed to preserve the fragile metal. Watch the conservation lab in action through massive viewing windows — it’s not just a museum, it’s real science at work!

Step inside the ship through detailed indoor exhibits that recreate life onboard
Gawk at the giant anchor and propeller, now fully restored and on display

Walk the deck of the outdoor full-size model of the Monitor’s exterior (hello, amazing photo op!)
Learn how the Monitor sank and was eventually discovered on the sea floor
More Museum Fun: Explore the World’s Waterways
Beyond the Monitor, the museum’s other galleries dive into maritime history from all around the globe.

Here’s a peek at what else is waiting inside:
Civil War Gallery – Artifacts and stories from a turning point in American naval history
World War I & II Exhibits – See how ships and sailors shaped the outcomes of the world wars
Art + Model Ships – Spot hundreds of model ships and learn how they’re made in a special model-making exhibit
Small Craft Center – Explore vessels from all over the world, from canoes to high-speed modern boats
Cape Charles Lighthouse Lens – This enormous, glowing glass lens from 1893 is absolutely stunning. This is definitely a personal favorite exhibit.
Mariners’ Park: Stretch Your Legs Before or After
Right outside the museum, you’ll find Mariners’ Park, a peaceful place to picnic, walk, or let the kids burn off some energy. It includes the Noland Trail, a 5-mile walking loop around scenic Lake Maury — perfect for a stroller walk or a kid-friendly nature hunt.
Coffee, Gifts & More
Yes, there’s a gift shop — and it’s a good one. You’ll find ship-themed toys, books, and souvenirs that won’t break the bank. The on-site coffee shop and café makes it easy to grab a snack, a caffeine boost, or even lunch without leaving the museum grounds.
